Abstract

1276215 Polyethylene-butyl rubber reaction products ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 21 Oct 1970 [21 Oct 1969 2 Oct 1970] 50057/70 Heading C3P [Also in Division F2] Fittings adapted to plug or join pipe sections made of high molecular weight polyethylene and comprising at least one insert portion of external diameter substantially the same as the inner diameter of the pipe and a shoulder portion of substantially larger diameter, are made of reaction products of 100 parts by weight of an ethylene polymer or copolymer of molecular weight at least 8000 and of density 0À94 to 0À95 g./cc., 5 to 15 parts by weight of butyl rubber and 0À30 to 2À5 parts by weight of a phenol containing two reactive functional groups in positions ortho to a phenolic hydroxy group and in which each position para to a phenol hydroxyl group is substituted by an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl group of up to 16 carbon atoms. The polyethylene may be an ethylene homopolymer or copolymer with up to 3 weight per cent of butene-1 or hexene-1. The butyl rubber may be a copolymer of isobutylene with isoprene, butadiene, piperylene, 2,3-dimethyl butadiene, 3-methylpentadiene-1,3, 2-methylpentadiene-1,3, hexadiene-1,3 or hexadiene-1,4. The phenol may be a 2,6-dimethylol phenol substituted in the 4 position with t-butyl, octyl, phenyl, benzyl, cumyl, dodecyl or cyclohexyl, or a condensate or halogenated, e.g. monobrominated, derivative thereof, and the reaction may be effected by milling at 250‹ to 425‹ F. In an example a pipe joint fitting is made of a reaction product of polyethylene, butyl rubber and brominated trinuclear phenolic resin containing zinc dibutyl dithiocarbamate or antioxidant.
