Abstract

1275882 Malononitrile derivatives SHIONOGI & CO Ltd 20 March 1970 [ 28 March 1969] 13457/70 Heading C2C A process for preparing a malononitrile derivative of the formula wherein R is an alkoxy group or a dialkylamino group and X is a cyano or carboalkoxy group, comprises reacting a cyano compound of the formula with a mixture of a dialkylformamide and an alkyl chloroformate under acidic or basic conditions, optionally in the presence of an inert solvent, e.g. benzene. The reaction is preferably carried out at a temperature of from - 5‹ to + 40‹ C. Depending upon the reaction conditions an alkoxymethylene malononitrile, dialkylaminomethylene malononitrile, alkyl alkoxymethylenecyanoacetate or alkyl dialkylaminomethylenecyanoacetate is produced. By reacting an amidine with an alkoxymethylene malononitrile or a dialkylaminomethylene malononitrile 2 - methyl - 4 - amino - 5 - cyanopyridine may be produced which is itself a useful intermediate in the production of thiamine.
