Abstract

1,274,727. Shrink-wrapping pallet loads. WELDOTRON CORP. 22 Sept., 1969 [7 Oct., 1968], No. 46628/69. Heading B8C. In a method of wrapping a pallet loaded with stacked boxes 12 the loaded pallet is fed along a conveyer 18 to a sensing device 26, 27 which, as it detects the leading edge of the load, operates, through an electrical circuit, Fig. 3, not shown, to cause a sheet of heat shrinkable film 28 to pay out at the same rate as the load and drape over the top surface 17 of the load. The sheet 28, which is unwound from a supply roll 31 and passed between guide rollers 32a, 32b, is automatically severed by a cutting device 33 when the trailing edge of the load is sensed by the device 26, 27. Another sheet of heat shrinkable film, not shown, may be unwound from a supply roll rotatably mounted under the conveyer 18 to provide a covering of sheet on the bottom surface of the pallet load. Alternatively, individual sheets may be placed over each pallet before the boxes 12 are stacked. The pallet load assembly is then moved forward into a curtain of heat shrinkable material formed by webs 13, 14 unwound from vertically journalled supply rolls 21,22 respectively and joined by a vertical weld 14, the webs being joined together and severed on the trailing face of the load by a pair of sealing and cutting jaw assemblies, not shown, to form a vertical sleeve 16 about the pallet and simultaneously forming a new curtain of heat shrinkable material for a succeeding loaded pallet. The loaded pallet is finally forwarded into a heat-shrinking and fusing apparatus 34 where the portion of the sleeve 16 which extends above the top surface of the load is mechanically locked and fused to the top sheet. The sides of the bottom sheet (35), Fig. 5, not shown, may be pulled upward around the bottom layer of the boxes before the pallet is passed into the apparatus 34. In other arrangements a sheet, or crossed strips of heat shrinkable material may be interposed between each, or every other layer of boxes, and heat sealed to the sleeve.
