Abstract

1,274,620. Printers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 19 Nov., 1970 [23 Dec., 1969], No. 54931/70. Heading G4H. In a font selection system for a cyclic printer having a plurality of fonts of characters, in which numbers representing required characters or character positions are stored for comparison with numbers representing type-faces for corresponding characters or character positions as the type-faces are cyclically brought into all potential printing positions, the system adds font-indicating numbers to the two sorts of numbers. As disclosed, type-faces are provided on respective fingers moved along the print line on a belt, there being two fonts. A finger counter is reset along with a font flip-flop as the beginning of the first font passes a predetermined point, clock pulses thereafter incrementing the counter to indicate the belt position, until a predetermined count is reached when the counter resets itself and sets the font flip-flop to indicate the second font. Each count of the finger counter is serialized in a shift register together with a bit from the font flip-flop and added to the required columns of the characters to be printed from a column memory, the sum in each case being compared with the identity of the character to be printed in that column, this identity coming from circulating storage including a shift register and containing a bit inserted in the shift register from a font selection flip-flop set according to the desired font. On equality, a pulse is routed to the appropriate hammer driver under control of the column memory. A print drum could be used instead.
