Abstract

1,273,509. Wells. DRESSER INDUSTRIES, Inc. 18 Feb., 1970 [28 Feb., 1969], No. 7818/70. Heading E1F. A wiper assembly for a wireline 56 extending into a conduit disposed in an oil or gas well comprises a housing 12 connectible to the conduit, a wiper member 14 constructed from a resiliently deformable material, and a piston 16 having surfaces 42, and 44, 46 facing in opposite directions, exposed to fluid pressure in the conduit and of such areas that the force on the piston from the fluid in the conduit is substantially zero, or a force urging the piston into engagement with member 14. The piston being movable to deform the wiper member into engagement with the wireline. Bushings 48 are split, permitting the fluid in the conduit to engage surface 42. Pressure in chamber 30 moves the piston against the force of spring 38 to deform member 14. In a modification the inner surface of piston 16 is straight and the two ends of the piston are exposed to fluid in the conduit, the piston having a flange between its ends extending into chamber 30:
