Abstract

1,273,071. Fire retardant polymer compositions. HOOKER CHEMICAL CORP. 16 March, 1970 [21 March, 1969], No. 12633/70. Headings C3B, C3F, C3G, C3P and C3R. Compositions comprise (1) a normally combustible polymer, (2) a Diels-Alder adduct of a polyhalogenated cyclopentadiene and (3) sodium hexafluorosilicate, sodium hexafluorotitanate, ammonium hexafluorotitanate, ammonium hexafluoroferrate, ammonium hexafluoroaluminate, kaolin, diatomaceous earth, diatomaceous earth/ammonium bromide, quartz, dicalcium phosphate, precipitated tricalcium phosphate, lead bromide, lead iodide and/or calcium silicate, the mixture of (2) and (3) containing 15 to 85 weight per cent of (2). Compounds of arsenic, antimony and bismuth may also be present. Specified polymers are polymers of ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbons, coumarone/indene resins, acrylic and methacrylic ester polymers, alkyd resins, cellulose esters and ethers, e.g. cellulose acetate, acetate/butyrate and nitrate and ethyl, hydroxyethyl, methyl and sodium oarboxymethyl cellulose, epoxy resins, furan resins, petroleum resins, polyurethanes, melamine resins, phenolic resins, polyamide resins, polyester resins, polysulphide resins, terpene resins, urea resins, vinyl resins, phenoxy resins, polyacetals and ABS, ABS-polyvinyl chloride and acrylic/polyvinyl chloride graft copolymers. Many suitable halogenated adducts are specified, and examples describe compositions comprising antimony trioxide; polypropylene, polystyrene or ABS resin; 1,4,7,10-dimethanocycloocta- 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 13, 14, 14 - dodecachloro- 1,4,4a,5,6,6a,7,10,10a,11,12,12a dodecahydro- [1,2,5,6] dibenzene, chlorendic anhydride or 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9,13,13,14,14-dodecaohloro- 1,4: 5,10: 6,9 -trimethano 11H benzo-[b]-fluorene; and sodium hexafluorosilicate, sodium hexafluorotitanate, ammonium hexafluorotitanate, ammonium hexafluoroaluminate, kaolin, diatomaceous earth, diatomaceous earth/ammonium bromide, quartz, dicalcium phosphate, precipitated tricalcium phosphate, lead bromide, lead iodide, ammonium hexafluoroferrate and calcium silicate.
