Abstract

1,273,053. Combustion chambers,fuel injection spark ignition engines. C. L. GOODACRE. June 30, 1970 [July 8, 1969], No.34368/69. Heading F1B. An I.C. engine comprises means for admitting air into a cylinder for compression by a piston, a fuel injector injecting fuel into a substantially spherical combustion chamber which is external to the cylinder, a transfer passage and ignition means so arranged that the moment ignition occurs the transfer passage is substantially closed by the piston so that combustion occurs substantially completely outside the cylinder. Air drawn into cylinder 8, Fig. 2 through valve 6 as transferred to the combustion chamber 14 through a tangential transfer passage 15, Fig. 3 during the compression stroke. Fuel is injected into the air swirl and ignited by a spark-plug 17 when the piston is at t.d.c. The combustion chamber 14, has a member 20, e.g. of metal, sintered ceramic with beryllum or plastics, providing a surface upon which the injected fuel burns at normal running temperatures. A further combustion chamber and transfer passage may be provided.
