Abstract

1,228,821. Flame igniters. SIMMS GROUP RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. Feb. 7, 1969 [Feb.14, 1968], No.7251/68. Heading F1B. A subsidiary cylinder 15 is connected with the main cylinder 12 of an internal-combustion engine by a passage controlled by a valve 17. The valve controls the passage so that part of the charge in the main cylinder passes into the subsidiary cylinder during the compression stroke of the main piston. A subsidiary piston 14 in the subsidiary cylinder increases the compression of the part of the charge in the subsidiary cylinder and additional fuel is supplied to the subsidiary cylinder. As shown a small pilot charge of fuel is injected through the inlet 9. This causes ignition to begin in the cylinder 15. At this point the valve 16 opens. Flame enters the main cylinder 11 and ignites the charge which is there present.
