Abstract

1,272,771. Riveting. AVDEL Ltd. 4 Aug., 1969 [8 Aug., 1968], No. 38000/68. Heading B3U. [Also in Division F2] A fastener placing tool comprises a threaded draw bolt 38 for engaging a threaded part 31 of the fastener and which is rotatable and reciprocable with respect to a housing 37, an abutment 39 displaceable with respect to the housing 37 upon engagement with the fastener during the setting operation to cause the draw bolt 38 to stop rotating and to retract so as to set the fastener and a spring loaded detent 76 for positively retaining the abutment 39 in its displaced position. The tool is adapted to be connected to a drive shaft 25 of a pneumatic rotary motor unit (Fig. 1, not shown) having an overload clutch (24). The shaft 25 is rotated clockwise to rotate a tube 47 which transmits drive through a frictional drive 60, provided by a spring steel clip (63) (Fig. 6, not shown), to the draw bolt 38 and the attached nose assembly 39. The draw bolt 38 is inserted into the fastener so that it is screwed into the nut portion 31 until an anvil face 72 of the nose assembly 39 abuts the fastener. Thereafter, the nose assembly 39 is moved rearwards with respect to the housing 37, the detent pin 76 moving from a groove 82 to an adjacent groove 81 to cause dogs 73 on the nose assembly 39 to engage between dogs 74 on the housing 37. The nose assembly 39 is keyed to the draw bolt 38 by keys 83, 84 so that upon engagement of the dog clutch 73, 74, the nose assembly 39 and also the draw bolt 38 are prevented from rotating and the friction drive 60 is overcome. The draw bolt 38 is thereby retracted by the consequent relative rotation between a nut 59 secured to the rotating tube 47 and a threaded portion 58 of the draw bolt 38. The fastener is sheared at 34 and the nut portion 31 pulled into a tubular portion 33 until the resistance to retraction of the draw bolt 38 is so high that the pre-set torque clutch (24) slips to stop rotation of the drive shaft 25. The draw bolt 38 is then moved forward and rotated in a counter clockwise direction to unscrew it from the set fastener.
