Abstract

1,080,179. Vices. WILTON CORPORATION. Nov. 1, 1965 [Dec. 21, 1964], No. 46097/65. Heading B3B. In a vice comprising a movable mounted jaw (19) and a stationary jaw (11), hydraulic means are provided for transmitting with increased force the manual power applied to the screw 15 of the vice, the movement of the screw being transmitted through a hydraulic medium to a slidably mounted thrust housing 23 which in turn is adapted to effect working movement of the jaw (19). The housing at its forward end has an inwardly extending annular flange 24 which defines a circular passage for slidable engagement on the intermediate portion 27 of the piston 32. The inner annular face 29 of the flange partially defines an enlarged chamber 28 into which hydraulic fluid is introduced through a passage closed by a plug 61. The hydraulic fluid is introduced also into a chamber 62 in the piston 32 and is selectively forced through ports 35 in the piston. A plunger 37 having a reduced portion 37a is slidably mounted in a passage in the piston 32 and is urged outwardly by a spring 39. A cylindrical sleeve 30 is threadedly connected to the end portion of the piston 32 and a stub shaft or driver 42 having relatively thick screw threads 43 is rotatably mounted in the sleeve 30, the threads 43 engaging with threads 41 in the sleeve 30. The driver 42 on inward movement pushes the plunger 37 against the action of a spring 57 and thus causes the hydraulic fluid to press against the enlarged face 29 of the chamber 28. The forced movement of the hydraulic fluid ceases when the end 37a of the plunger strikes the end of the passage 62. The shaft 42 has formed therein a diametrically extending passage in which are mounted two outwardly biased spring plugs 45 which engage a releasable rotary mechanism. The end of the sleeve 30 has a pair of arcuate bevelled flanges (46, 47) which are on opposite sides of the passage in the outer end portion of the sleeve 30. One end portion of each flange has a bevelled portion 48 which, when the movable jaw clamps the work, allows inward movement of the plugs and rotation of the driver relative to the sleeve 30. The opposite ends of each of the arcuate flanges (46, 47) have sharp angled corners (49) so that when the driver is rotated in counter-clockwise direction, the plugs 45 will engage the angular shoulders to transmit such rotation to the sleeve 30 and cylindrical member 32 to retract the screw 15 to original position.
