Sliver is fed into a container 12 in a plurality of loops 32 (Fig. 2) by apparatus comprising a base 140, a calender roll assembly 14 for feeding the sliver, supported by the base, first drive means for rotating the calender roll assembly about an axis 20 offset from the container axis 28, second drive means for rotating the calender roll assembly about the axis 28, and means for adjusting the distance between these two axes. Rotation about central axis. A plate 36 bearing a ring gear 142 is driven by gear 136. Adjustment of inter-axial distance. The calender roll assembly 14 is rotatably mounted eccentrically in a circular plate 48 which is itself eccentrically carried by plate 36, and may be clamped thereto, after relative rotation to provide the desired inter-axial distance, by clamps 54. Rotation about offset axis. Gear 170 drives a ring gear 172 rotatably carried by plate 36, and fixed to an internal ring gear 204, which drives gear 200 (mounted in a slot in plate 36 to permit adjustment of the inter-axial distance), the gear 200 being engaged by a ring gear 206 carried by the calender roll assembly 14. Rotation of calender rolls. The calender rolls 86 are driven by a gear train 120, 118, 114, 108, 100 which is driven by the relative rotation between calender roll assembly 14 and the eccentric plate 48, gear 100 engaging an internal ring gear 104 fixed to the underside of plate 48. Speed variations. The overlap between adjacent sliver loops 32 may be adjusted by replacing a pair of gears 280 282 (Fig. 8, not shown) in the drive to gear 136 with a different pair, thus changing the rate of rotation of plate 36. Such a change produces a small change in sliver delivery speed by changing the speed of rolls 86. This may be compensated by replacing gears 108, 114 with a different pair.
