[Also in Division B5] The permeability of thermoplastic films, e.g. of polyethylene or PVC, to gases and vapours is increased by applying a surface, coated with abrasive particles, to the film using pressure sufficient to cause the particles to penetrate the surface of the film but without causing the film to become pervious to liquids or solids The abrasive surface may comprise a coating of evenly distributed garnet or alumina particles on the surface of a roller, and may be in a discontinuous pattern, e.g. stripes. One or more pressure rollers will serve to engage the film with the abrasive roller, and may have a heatable and/or resilient surface. The product is useful as a food packaging film, and for encasing growing plants. The pore size may be up to 10 mils.
