Abstract

1,270,531. Photo-copying. C. BARBER, J. F. FARROW and D. E. CLAFTON. April 18, 1969 [Jan. 18, 1968], No.2761/68. Heading G2A. In a photo-copying apparatus and method, the whole area of the negative to be copied is illuminated, light from the negative falling on photosensitive material 12 which acts as a diffuser, passing light into a recess 54 containing a photocell 56 which controls the exposure time, an exposure being terminated by interposing a filter 58 for actinic light between the negative and the material 12. In this way, the exposure time is dependent on the average density of the negative. Sequence of Operations. The light-sensitive material 12 and the negative strip are fed step by step in unison so that the first negative is beneath the light source. (In a semi-automatic apparatus, the first negative is positioned manually). At this stage, the filter 58 is in the position shown, to allow of focusing without exposure, and paper masks 72 are set for the required aperture size. Depression of a start button starts a motor 66 to raise the filter 58 so that the material 12 is exposed. As stated above, the photo-cell 56 controls the exposure time by association with a condenser which discharges on reaching a pre-set level. This reactuates the motor 66 to lower the filter 58, and operates a motor 38 to advance the paper 12 by a distance equal to the circumference of an O ring carried by a shaft 30. After one rotation of the shaft 30 the motor 38 is stopped by means of a cam 34. A guillotine 52 is provided by an exit slot 50. The apparatus is then ready to copy the next negative.
