Abstract

1,270,409. Stitching machines. HOBSON DESIGNS Ltd. 12 Aug., 1970 [25 Sept., 1969], No. 47251/69. Heading B4C. A stitching machine for stitching together sets of sheets comprises a beam 6 mounted in a frame (not shown) for vertical reciprocation by a crank-shaft 36 and a connecting rod 12. The beam carries one or more stitching heads 8 and the machine includes a stitching station 2. The crank-shaft is driven by an electric motor 22 via an electromagnetic clutch 20 and an electromagnetic brake 18, and the sequence of operations of the machine is controlled by cams 14, 16, 24 and 26 which actuate microswitches 28, 30, 32 and 34 respectively. Normally closed switch 32 is in series with normally open switch 28 and the brake 18, and normally open switches 30, 34 are in parallel with each other and in series with the clutch 20. In operation (with the crank pin initially at the top dead centre position, the switch 28 being closed and brake 18 being energized), a set of sheets is fed to the station 2 and knocked up by means (not shown) driven in synchronism with rotary shaft 4, which is driven independently of the motor 22. When the sheets are properly positioned cam 24 opens switch 32 and causes brake 18 to be de-energized. Subsequently and before switch 32 is released, cam 26 actuates switch 34 which closes a circuit including the clutch 20. The motor 22 commences to drive the crank-shaft. As soon as the crank-shaft 36 rotates cam 14 is removed from engagement with switch 28 which thus opens. Cam 24 now releases switch 32 which thus closes. Continued rotation of the crank-shaft causes cam 16 to actuate switch 30 which thus closes and cam 26 then releases switch 34 which thus opens. As the crank-shaft approaches the end of a single revolution, during which the heads 8 have applied stitches to sheets at the station 2, the cam 16 releases the switch 30 thus causing de-energization of the clutch 20, and the crank-shaft is stopped when cam 14 engages switch 28 to energize the brake 18. Continued rotation of drive shaft 4 will again deliver a set of sheets to the station 2 prior to a further stitching operation.
