Abstract

1,269,052. Moulding concrete. SCIENCE RESEARCH COUNCIL. 6 June, 1969 [12 June, 1968; 31 Jan., 1969], Nos. 28048/68 and 5502/69. Heading B5A. [Also in Division H1] In a method of manufacturing electrical apparatus, one or more electrical conductors are supported in a mould and then concrete is supplied to embed the conductor or conductors, reinforcement means other than the conductor or conductors being provided and arranged to compressively stress the concrete. The stress may minimize the effect of the differential expansion between the concrete and the conductor or conductors. In a machine for accelerating charged particles a beam tube 11 extends through two halves 12, 13 of a yoke and through apertures in steel plates 17, 18; reinforcement rods 19, 21 also extend through apertures in the plates, and coil windings 14 separated by sintered alumina strips extend through the yoke. Tension is applied to the rods 19, 21 and the structure is encased to form a mould, the plates providing its end walls. Concrete is applied and compacted by vibration and/or by vacuum. After the concrete has set, nuts 20, 23, 24 and 25 are screwed on to the rods and the externally applied tension released. In a modification an assembly comprising a beam tube, windings and a yoke are supported centrally within a steel tube into which concrete is supplied under pressure which is maintained until the concrete has set, whereby the tube maintains compressive stress upon the concrete.
