Abstract

1,268,997. Pitch and artificial resin compositions. QUAKER OATS CO. 28 July, 1970 [4 Aug., 1969], No. 36578/70. Heading C3N and C3R. [Also in Division C1] A binder comprises 50 to 75% weight coal tar pitch and a monomeric polymerizable thermosetting admixture including (1) furfural and (2) phenol, cyclohexanone, and/or a ketone CH 3 -CO-R. R is a C# 2 aliphatic group. The pitch may have softening point > 100‹ C. Also present may be a catalyst being strong acid, alkali or alkaline-earth hydroxide, and/or amine. 30-80% of the thermosetting admixture may be furfural. The binder may be mixed with a sand, gravel, or basic refractory, to provide refractory bricks or for road-surfacing, or with particulate carbon, e.g. anthracite, to provide shaped articles, e.g. electrodes, which may then be coked. The product may also be used as a ramming mix or for coating or foundry purposes.
