Abstract
1,267,841. Filter. CORN PRODUCTS CO. 8 April, 1969 [9 April, 1968], No. 18017/69. Heading B1D. An inward flow filter candle comprises an impervious tube or cylinder 1 over which is drawn a cloth bag 3, spaced from the main surface of the cylinder by ribs or knobs on the cylinder itself or by a separate layer of mesh 2, to define an annular filtrate collecting space of small volume which discharges into cup-like head 4. The bag 3 is clamped round head 4, which is screw coupled (8) to conduit 9, whereby filtrate is withdrawn and backwashing air, steam or hot water delivered to the space. The backwashing fluid may be augmented by pulsated compressed air. Conduit 9 (Fig. 5, not shown) comprises two concentric rings connected by radial pipes and supporting an array of candles in a common housing. The conduit and candles are supported by a demountable coupling (11), where the conduit is connected to a fixed outlet pipe (Fig. 3, not shown), and by two hook-like supports (10), on the housing wall, over which engage elements (12), on the conduit. When the housing cover is removed and coupling (11) disconnected, the conduit 9 and candles depending therefrom can be lifted from the housing. Both ends of the candle could be open to allow filtrate discharge. The filter is used to purify first draw liquors produced in sugar refining, with which adsorbents are mixed prior to filtration. The solids form a filtering cake on the cloth, the first liquid to penetrate the cloth being relatively unfiltered.
