Load handling apparatus comprises a mast 10 which may upstand from the front of a lift truck, on which an elevator 12 is mounted for upward and downward slidable movement under the action of an hydraulic ram 13. The elevator 12 carries a mounting structure 15 comprising a shaft 20 rotatably mounted in the elevator 12 and a tubular part 27 having a shaft 30 extending therethrough. A pair of gripping arms 16 are rotatably mounted on the shaft 30 by means of sleeves (37), Fig. 7 (not shown), the sleeves (37) and part 27 having coacting cam surfaces (38), (34) which cause outward and inward movement of the arms 16 when the arms are pivoted upwardly and downwardly, respectively, the sleeves (37) being biased inwardly by springs 40. Each arm 16 carries an adjustable leg 45 with an extension 50. The mounting structure 15, arms 16 and legs 45 are rotatable about the axis of shaft 20 and to effect this rotation the shaft 20 is provided with a pulley 55 and the mast 10 with upper and lower pulleys 56, 57 about which pulleys a cable 58 is trained. In operation of the device the elevator 12 is lowered to the ground whereupon the legs 45 raise the arms 16 to receive a drum 60. Upon raising the elevator 12 the arms 16 are swung downwardly and thus move inwardly under the cam-action to grip the drum 60. As the elevator 12 rises further the pulley 55 rises with it and when clamps (59), Fig. 2 (not shown), contact either of the pulleys 56, 57 the pulley 55 is caused to rotate upon continued movement of the elevator 12 thus tilting the drum 60 to permit its emptying while it is held by lips 52 on the extensions 50. The arms 16 are maintained in a horizontal position during their raising by means of horizontal pins (33) mounted on part 27 and corresponding recesses (44), Fig. 6 (not shown), in the arms 16 which also prevent lateral movement of the arms 16 during the tilting procedure.
