The arm 52 is hollow, Fig. 4, and has arms 56, 57 supported by rollers and depending through a slot 55 to mount a carriage 54, having a bracket 58, for movement along the arm and to which an arm 59 is pivotally mounted. An article engaging means 60 is secured by an arm 62 to the arm 59 and has handles 63, 64 with switches to control the raising and lowering of the arm 52 and by which a pipe handling frame 71 can be manually moved both along the arm 52 and pivotally about the carriage 54 to engage pins on the frame 71 with the pipes. The edge members of the frame 71 are inclined to form a 60 degree parallelogram so that pipes picked up from a stack can be placed crosswise on a base 11 against the inclined inner surface 16 in a stable state while also leaving the stack in a stable condition. The post 20 is mounted on a plate 21 rotatable on a fixed plate 22 which is mounted by screw jacks 24, 25 on a frame 23 so that adjustment can be made to ensure that the post 20 is vertical and the arm 52 horizontal. To assist movement of the carriage 54 along the arm 52 if it is inclined an electric motor drive may be provided. A frame with fork lifts may replace the frame 71 for handling other articles.
