Abstract

1,266,649. Wire-wrapping tool. GARDNER DENVER CO. 1 Sept., 1970 [14 Jan., 1970], No. 41868/70. Heading B3E. A rotatable bit and sleeve assembly 86 of a conductor wrapping tool 10 comprises a sleeve 90 in a non-rotatabie relationship with a bit 88, the sleeve having a pair of parallel longitudinal slots 130, 132, opening to the end portion of the sleeve. and operable to be longitudinally extended and retracted with respect to the bit. In operation a lever 100 is pivoted so that a yoke 102 bears against flange 97 and so moves the sleeve axially to the extended position, Fig. 4. The end portion of a conductor wire 138 is positioned transversely to the rotational axis of the bit, moved axially into the slots 130, 132, and lodged in a notch 136. Upon release of the lever 100 the sleeve is retracted by a spring 96 and the conductor wire is pulled into a groove 122 in the periphery of the bit 88. The wrapping tool is then positioned so that a terminal post enters the central bore 126 of the bit. Retraction of the bit in the longitudinal direction away from the sleeve end, due to the terminal not entering the bore 126 correctly, is prevented by a biased trigger member 74 engaging a collar 116. The bit and sleeve assembly 86, prepositioned at the end of the previous operational cycle by a projection 70 on the trigger 66 arresting indexing cam 60, are rotated by pressing the trigger which releases the cam 60 and collar 116 and opens a throttle valve 34 to allow compressed air to drive motor 18. The motor 18 rotates the bit and sleeve assembly via drive-shafts 46, 48 and 108, so that the conductor wire 138 is wrapped in a series of convolutions as it is withdrawn from the groove 122.
