A machine for sewing on buttons in which a support 23 for a button clamp 55 located below the needle 40 of the machine and a material holding plate 45, 37 on a plate 24 are connected together by gearing 28, 32, 29, 33 in such a way that the plates 23, 24 can be moved together by a cam and can be displaced relative to each other by a second cam. A first cam moves a rod 22 which is fixed to plate 23. Movement of plate 23 carrying the button clamp 55 on arm 17 causes the gear wheel 28 to rotate and thus the gear wheel 31 rotates to move the plate 24 in the same direction and to the same extent as plate 24. When a cam 56 is rotated to move shaft 34 axially the gear wheels 28, 29 move transversely to the plates 23, 24 and cause movement of the plates relative to each other in the longitudinal direction. This movement causes relative movement of the button clamp and the work holder which allows for the production of some blind stitches at the completion of the button sewing to prevent folding of the material.
