In an electromagnetically-operated valve an armature 9 is displaced upwards against the bias of springs 21, 22 to move a closure member 8 off a seat 4. Spring 22 has a higher rate than spring 21 and only comes into use towards the end of the upward movement when a pin 24 abuts a plug 13 and mechanically bridges the spring 21.
