Abstract
1,265,610. Flame retardant polyurethane foam. KNAPSACK A.G. 4 May, 1970 [10 May, 1969], No. 21274/70. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] Flame retardant hard polyurethane foams are made by coating the partially or completely hardened foam (e.g. by spreading, brushing electrostatic or air spraying or trowelling) with a solution or suspension of an ammonium polyphosphate of formula H( n-m ) +2 (NH 4 ) m P n O 3n+1 , wherein the ratio m:n is 0.7 to 1.1 in a solution of PVC in a solvent such as methylethylketone, cyclohexanone, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane or dimethylformamide and then drying the coating to a thickness of at least 0.05 mm. The foam may be roughened by emery disc or sand blasting before application of the coating. Preferably, at least 0.1 parts of ammonium polyphosphate per part of PVC is dissolved or suspended in the PVC solution, although this may be partly replaced by up to 30% wt of asbestos wool, ammonium bromide, red phosphorus or other flame retardants. The polyvinyl chloride employed in the solution preferably has a K value of 50-70 and maximum particle size of 0.2 mm. The coating may also contain dyes and pigments. In the Examples, zinc plated iron sheets coated with polyurethane foam are rendered flame retardant.
