Abstract

1,263,658. Purification of #-caprolactam. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 11 June, 1970 [13 June, 1969], No. 28263/70. Heading C2C. Crude #-caprolactam is purified by preparing a caprolactam-crystal suspension having a solids content of 25-75% by weight and containing one or more melting-point-lowering substances at 30-67‹ C., quantitatively separating the suspension, in a tube comprising a filtering zone, a purification zone and a melting zone, into pure #-caprolactam crystals and residual melt containing impurities by filtration, countercurrent washing with pure melt in the presence of a temperature gradient whose upper temperature limit corresponds to that of the melt, melting the crystals in the melting zone and running off the resulting molten pure #-caprolactam from the tube. Preferably the crystal suspension has a 40-50% by weight solids content and is prepared at 35‹ C. The melting point lowering substances are preferably phenol and water.
