Abstract
1,263,139. Bismuth molybdate or bismuth phosphomolybdate. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 11 Dec., 1969, No. 60618/69. Heading B1E. [Also in Divisions C2 and C5] Bismuth molybdate or bismuth phosphomolybdate on silica catalysts are formed by: (i) adding ammonium carbonate or bicarbonate to a aqueous mixture of colloidal silica and oxides or precursers of oxides of bismuth, molybdenum and optionally phosphorus, the amount of carbonate or bicarbonate adding being such as to give a composition of pH 5-7.5; (ii) drying; and (iii) calcining at 400- 550‹C. The final catalyst contains 5-90wt% silica. Specified reactants are: bismuth nitrate, chloride, bromide, sulphate, formate or acetate; ammonium molybdate, alkali molybdates or molybdic acid; and other, meta or pyrophosphoric acid. The colloidal silica is suitably derived from an aqueous silica sol. Auxiliary supports specified are silicon carbide, alumina, aluminasilica and titania. The catalyst may also contain as promoter 0.1- 10wt% of alkaline earth metal, rare earth metals, Gp. VIII metals, Gp. V metals or manganese. The catalyst after drying may contain combined carbonate e.g. in excess of 0.1% carbon dioxide, however this is apparently driven out on calcination.
