Abstract

An acoustic directional transmitting and/or receiving system comprising an arrangement of transducers or groups of transducers of different extent perpendicular to the major lobe of their corresponding directional characteristic, the n-directional characteristics being in different directions, is characterized in that the n-transmitting and/or receiving channels which are connected to the arrangement for different frequencies or frequency bands are such that the different frequencies or, for the case of frequency bands, the centre frequencies, are inversely proportional to the extents; and in the case of frequency bands the ratio of bandwidth to centre frequency is constant. In a configuration of receiving transducers S 1 , S 2 ... Sn grouped into sets d 1 , d 2 ... dn, the corresponding directions P 1 , P 2 ... P n have equal beam widths if band-pass filters F 1 , F 2 ... F n are employed, the centre frequencies of which are inversely proportional to the extents d 1 , d 2 ... d n , the ratio of bandwidth to centre frequency being kept constant. Compensators N 1 , N 2 ... N n may be incorporated. For indicating direction the channels 1, 2 ... n may be scanned as described in Specification 1,220,629. For aural direction-finding the outputs of scanner A are heterodyned to a common frequency band. Each bearing P may be found utilizing the sum-and-difference method; or each set d may be subdivided into two groups, each having a band-pass filter, the two filters feeding a correlator, Fig. 2 (not shown). In a further embodiment the sets d may be fed sequentially to a band-pass filter of variable bandwidth, Fig. 3 (not shown).
