Heading C2C. Benzene tri- or tetra-carboxylic acids are obtained by oxidizing tri- or tetra-alkylbenzenes or the derivatives thereof with a heteroatom in the side chain with O 2 or an O 2 -containing gas in the vapour phase in the presence of NH 3 and H 2 O vapour in a molar ratio of alkylbenzenes, O 2 or O 2 -containing gas, NH 3 and H 2 O vapour equal to 1 : 20 : 5 : 30 to 1 : 100 : 40 : 100, respectively, in the presence of catalysts consisting of vanadium oxides modified by the oxides of Sn, Ti, Bi or Mo at a molar ratio of vanadium oxides to the modifying oxides equal to 1 : 0À5 to 8 and a temperature of from 350‹ to 440‹ C., hydrolysing the resulting nitriles, imides, cyanimides or mixtures thereof with 2-10% aqueous solutions of acids or alkalis at a temperature from 60‹ to 100‹ C. Examples are given for the production of trimellitic acid and pyromellitic acid. 4-Cyanophthalimide and pyromellitediimide are obtained as intermediates.
