Abstract

1,261,426. Vehicle safety belts. P. M. BAYON. 23 Sept., 1969 [27 Sept., 1968; 1 Aug., 1969], No. 46791/69. Heading A3V. A vehicle seat includes a safety belt comprising an automatic winder 31 mounted on the seat frame and from which extends a belt 32 passing over the seat back to a mounting 33 on the seat frame or the vehicle, the belt in use being extended to form lap and diagonal lengths 32V, 32D and being caused to pass around a finger 38 which is locked to prevent release of the belt by a cranked handle 42, the end of the belt adjacent the winder being also locked to prevent further unwinding by being clamped between a cam 44 and a stirrup 37, the stirrup being held in place by fingers 39, 40. In a further embodiment the winder 66 rotates with a spindle 67 which can be locked when the belt is in use by a lever 73 engaging a ratchet on the spindle, the lever being held in contact with the ratchet by a spring loaded pawl 75, with the belt passing around the lever. In a modification, Fig. 3, the spindle is formed in two parts and when the lever is locked in position by the pawl the adjacent ends of the spindle are locked against rotation by interengaging teeth. In a further modification only a lap length of the belt is formed and it is the end of the belt remote from the winder which engages the lever 73. In the embodiment of Fig. 12 the end 60e of the belt is adapted to be locked around pawl 110 by a bolt 111 operated by a hand lever 114, the pawl moving to a position where it can be engaged by the bolt during unwinding of the belt by means of a rack and pinion 105, 106.
