Abstract

1,260,489. Burners. GAS COUNCIL. 29 May, 1969 [30 May, 1968], No. 25918/68. Heading F4T. A tunnel burner comprises a combustion chamber 13 having an open exit at its down stream end and an upstream end wall 10 from which projects a protrusion 17, an air duct 11 supplying a series of elongated air orifices 15 opening into the combustion chamber, and a fuel duct 12 supplying a series of elongated fuel orifices 18 opening into the combustion chamber, the air orifices 15 being arranged with their respective axes substantially parallel to the axis of the burner and each of the fuel orifices 18 being so arranged in relation to a plane containing the axes of the two nearest air orifices that the axis of the fuel orifice passes through that plane substantially at right angles thereto and between the axes of those two nearest air orifices. As shown, the combustion chamber or tunnel 13 is formed axially in a cylindrical block 14 of refractory material, and the downstream face of the protrusion 17 is provided with two small pilot fuel orifices 20 located one to each side of a spark plug electrode ignition device 19. In a further embodiment (Figs. 3, 4 and 5, not shown) the wall of the fuel duct 12 is thicker and has formed in its outer surface a number of circumferentially equispaced longitudinal grooves (21) which, together with the radially inner edge of the central aperture in the wall 10, define the air orifices. Fig. 6 shows a complete view of this second embodiment described, which is a tunnel burner of the recuperative type, in which fuel is supplied through an inlet pipe 42, air is supplied through an inlet pipe 53, and products of combusion flow along annular passage 54 to flue outlet pipe 36, heating the air passing along air duct 11.
