Abstract

Heat storage capacity of a friction brake is increased by a thermal storage mass which is subject to polymorphous conversion or change to liquid state due to temperature rise. Figs. 1 .. 4 (not shown) illustrate hollow disc brakes and a drum brake and cone clutch with hollow rims housing the thermal storage mass. The cavities are preferably finned to improve heat exchange. The material may be for example a mixture of potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide or potassium and sodium nitrate, or eutectic alloys of aluminium or magnesium.
