Abstract
1,260,261. Microwave ovens; aerials. BOWMAR/TIC Inc. 24 Feb., 1970 [4 March, 1969], No. 8698/70. Headings H4A and H5H. A microwave oven 20 includes a pair of spaced dielectric plates 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, each carrying an antenna element 10 for radiating microwave energy into the oven. The plates 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, are transparent to microwave energy, but absorb a controlled amount to provide a minimum load for the oven. They also facilitate cleaning of the oven enclosure. The antenna elements 10 are embedded within the plates 12, 12<SP>1</SP> as shown. Such elements 10 may be formed alternatively as printed elements, Fig. 4 (not shown), or be embedded in a surface of the plates, Fig. 3 (not shown). Probes 18 connected to each antenna extend through the back wall 76 of the oven and into the arms 36, 38, of a feed waveguide tee 40. The magnetron of a source 48 of microwave energy has an output probe 50 and shield 52 extending into the leg 46 of tee 40. Current may be passed through the antennae 10 to give conventional resistance heating.
