Abstract
1,260,157. Taking up slack in flexible elements. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 21 May, 1969 [23 May, 1968], No. 25843/69. Heading B8B. [Also in Divisions E1-E2 and F2] An apparatus 40 for carrying out operations on an underwater well installation from a surface vessel, comprises telescoping members 41, 42 which compensate for rise and fall of the vessel, and means 70, 72 which take up the slack in a flexible cable 66. The means 70, 72 comprise a sheave 72 mounted on the member 41 and a weighted sheave 70 movable in a slot 17 in the same member. When the members 41, 42 telescope together, the sheave 70 descends in the slot 71 to take up the slack in the cable 66. When the members 41, 42 extend, the sheave 70 rises in the slot 71. Damping cylinders 50, 51, Fig. 3, cushion the telescoping members against extension loads. The cable 66 may be a control line for carrying signals to a tool 65 which is to be connected to the well-head. In use, the apparatus 40 together with the tool 65 is lowered on a pipe string 39 along a guideline 29 and the tool latched to the well-head.
