Low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus. - A quartz mercury vapour lamp containing inert gas at a pressure of a few centimetres of mercury is connected to an alternating current source of volt. age sufficient to start the lamp; the current increases until the pressure of the mercury vapour equals or exceeds 1 kilogram per square cm., the inert gas being expelled into a cooler part of the tube such as the reservoirs 5, Fig. 3. A voltage of 500 is suitable for use with neon, and a higher voltage with nitrogen. The temperature may rise to about 700‹ C. The electrodes may consist of tungsten blades 7, connected to tungsten wires 4, and situated above mercury reservoirs 8: or the electrodes may be of mercury. A vertical lamp has an upper electrode of tungsten and a lower electrode of mercury. An inductance may be connected in series.
