An automatic firearm comprises a reciprocating breech block 12 having a pair of spring loaded cartridge feed pawls 14, 15 adjusted to be moved alternately from an outward, operative position to an inward inoperative position. The positions of the cartridge feed pawls in their feeding movement are controlled by a slide member 19 which is actuated by an ammunition selector slide (Fig. 3, not shown) displaceable longitudinally of the firearm. In the construction shown the two ammunition feed ducts are positioned one above the other on the same side of the firearm and the cartridge feed devices of the ducts are gas actuated selectively, that is movement of the selector slide opens one valve member 27 or 28 while closing another valve member 28 or 27 through gearing (Fig. 3, not shown) both valve members being in communication with the bore of the barrel 11. The cartridge feed devices each comprise feed slides 17c, 18c, feed pawls and detent pawls (Fig. 2, not shown) and are each actuated by a pin 21b, 22b of a gas piston 21, 22 working in a slot 25a, 26a of an operating sleeve 25, 26, the pins 21b, 22b being constrained to move longitudinally of the firearm only. The slide member 19 carries a pin 19d which works in an angled slot in the selector slide, which slide is guided on a pair of pins of the firearm casing 10.
