Abstract

1,258,416. Valves. MAC VALVES Inc. 24 Dec., 1968, No. 42377/71. Divided out of 1,258,415. Heading F2V. In a solenoid-operated reversing valve having an inlet port 14, a service port 21, and an exhaust port (26, Fig. 2, not shown), control of flow between the respective ports is achieved by appropriately changing the state of a solenoid 13, the solenoid, when energized, causing downward movement of an armature 50 and hence corresponding movement of a valve member 38, such downward movement being effected in opposition to a spring 34. Interposed between the valve body 10 and the solenoid and armature, there is a floating polepiece 53 which, in the de-energized state of the solenoid, is urged by a spring 59 on to an abutment 58. Subsequent to the solenoid being energized and valve member 38 engaging the lowermost seating 22, the polepiece overcomes the force of spring 59, moves upwardly and, by virtue of the provision thereon of a shading coil 57, locks on to the armature and so serves to reduce the inrush current to a locking current. The valve member is comprised by an annular seal member 35 which is bonded to the valve stem 11. The diameter of the seal member is such that it can be force-fitted through one of the valve seats 18 or 22 whereafter it expands to a diameter greater than that of either of the seats. The terminal portions of the seal member are tapered.
