Abstract

1,257,227. Pivoted-calliper disc brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. 17 March, 1970 [2 April, 1969], No. 17228/69. Heading F2E. A fixed support 11, Figs. 1 and 4, has a flat face 16 in which are two threaded holes 17. A hinge piece 18 comprising a hinge barrel 19 and shank 20 has two holes 21 larger than, but respectively centred with, the threaded holes 17, when the shank 18 is secured by a clamping plate 22 and set-screws 24, Fig. 2, to the support. A calliper 12, Fig. 1, has two arms 2'6, 27, of which the upper, 26, rests on the hinge barrel 29, and the lower, 27, embraces the head 32 of a hinge pin 31. The pin extends through a hole 28 in arm 26 and is held with its head in contact with barrel 19 by a spring 33 cooperating with a washer 34 and clip ring 35. Brake pads 13, 14, Fig. 2, carried by metal backing plates 36, 37 respectively, are located by a rod 38 traversing calliper 12; plate 37 abuts against part of the calliper, while plate 36 is acted on by a piston (not shown), movable by liquid pressure. A lever 42, Fig. 2, for mechanical application, is pivoted on the calliper. The invention ensures that the surfaces of pads 13, 14 are set parallel to the surfaces of brake disc 10 when the brake is first assembled During assembly, the hinge piece 18 is first lightly clamped between support 11 and plate 22, such clamping being sufficient to hold the hinge piece when no load is applied thereto. The brake pads 13, 14 are then applied to disc 10 by the brake-applying means. The application of this load serves to move the calliper 12 and hinge piece 18 slidably relative to support 11, the hinge pin 31 thus moving approximately normal to the plane of disc 10. The set-screws 24 may now be tightened. Modifications (mentioned only).-Only a single set-screw need be provided. Means other than the clamping plate 22 and setscrew(s) may be used. Other arrangements for mounting the calliper on the hinge piece may be used.
