Abstract
1,257,218. Making: tubular film. LONZA Ltd. 21 Feb., 1969 [1, March, 1968], No. 9607/69. Heading B5B. A process for the manufacture of a molecularly biaxially-oriented thermoplastic tubular film includes extruding a film tube, supporting the tube against internal gas pressure by a coolable hollow support cylinder (e.g. 3), passing air between the tube and cylinder to prevent contact and remove condensate, preventing tube expansion by means of a first cooling ring (e.g. 5), and expanding the tube between the ring and a calibration cylinder (e.g. 7) by pressing the tube against at least one further cooling ring (e.g. 6) the position of each of which is adjustable along the tube axis, the speed of tube withdrawal from the first ring being greater than the speed of emergence of the tube from the nozzle. The molecular orientation of the film may be varied by selection of the distance between the rings, the size of the ring diameters, the shape, axial length and surface properties of the inner surfaces, or the temperature of the support cylinder or ring inner surfaces. The diameters of the rings may be such that the tube is not uniformly expanded. Air may flow between the tube and cylinder 3 from annulus 2 to annulus 4 or vice versa. The inner surfaces of the rings may be made of a textile, or of tetrafluorethylene. The use of polyvinylchloride is exemplified.
