Abstract
772,134. Making corrugated tubes. DEBENEDETTI, R. Nov. 18, 1955 [Nov. 22, 1954], No. 33124/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A process for manufacturing flexible metal tubes of the corrugated type is characterized in that the corrugations are obtained by fluid pressure acting on an annular zone of the tube corresponding to one corrugation through the wall of a member made of rubber or other resilient material. The apparatus comprises a mandrel 1 having an axial bore 2 terminating in radial bores 3 communicating with an annular recess 4 provided'in the external centre portion of the mandrel. Surrounding the mandrel is a resilient tubular member 6, e.g. of rubber, secured thereto by metal tubular members 7 and 8 over which passes the tube to be corrugated. A corrugated die 10 surrounds the assembly. In operation fluid pressure is directed along bores 2 and 3 and into the recess 4 where the fluid-pressure acts on the resilient member 6 to form a corrugation in the tube. As the tube is free to slide between the ungrooved portion of the die and the tubular-member 7 no stretching of the material takes place. The shape of the corrugations may be subsequently modified by shaped rollers, if desired. The tube may be of stainless steel of any thickness or having multiple walls. Corrugations of various heights may be obtained by varying the fluid pressure. The resilient member may have a variable section, e.g. corrugated, and may be fixed to the mandrel with axial precompression to avoid excessive stretch of the member.
