The jaws 11, 12 of a supporting grab are connected to a linkwork which is spring- loaded to open the jaws when these are unloaded. As shown in Fig. 1, the springs 10 exert tension between a supporting spindle 2 and a cross-over spindle 9, this tension being overcome by the weight of the load 14 to draw the jaws together. The ends of the jaws are provided with gripping claws 13a. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the links 21, 22 are pivoted at cross-over spindle 25 as before, but their upper ends engage the supporting spindle 20 in oblique slots 23, 24 which serve to close the jaws on loading.
