Abstract

In a multiple-screw press having a plurality of screws 6, 7, each carrying a nut 8, 9 rotatably mounted in a ram 10, the nuts are coupled for joint rotation and are individually protected by overload-responsive safety members. In the example shown in Figs. 1, 2, the nuts 8, 9 are formed with extensions 17, 18 which are coupled by fork and dog connections. These connections have a clearance of some millimetres and are protected from overload by shear pins 19, 20. The press is driven by pistons 13, 14 in fluid pressure cylinders 15, 16. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates the couplings in a four-screw press, while Fig. 4 (not shown) shows gear teeth (25, 26) on the nut extensions ensuring equal pivoting of the nuts.
