Abstract

1,226,889. Moulding helical tooth gears. MARTIN BROS. (TOOLMAKERS) Ltd. 23 Jan., 1970 [1 Feb., 1969], No. 5559/69. Heading B5A. A gear-wheel with helical teeth B is formed from powdered material in an internally grooved die 1 between two punches 3, 14 at least one of which has helical teeth corresponding to the grooves in the die and is rotated so that its teeth follow the die grooves as it advances into the die. As shown, both the upper and lower punches are grooved. The lower punch 3 is connected to pinion 3A and is mounted on rotary table 7. Rotation of punch 3 is caused by rack 12 which is driven by fluid-operated piston 11A operated from standard fluid powered copying equipment deriving its control signal from piston 10A acting on cam or template 9. In alternative embodiments the die may also be rotated by similar copying equipment. When one of the punches does not have helical teeth it has a flat end to close one end of the die cavity. The punch and gear-wheel body are formed with interengaging projections and recesses so that continued rotation of the punch can be used to remove the formed wheel from the die.
