1,255,897. Hydrogenating and refining oils. EMPRESA NACIONAL CALVO SOTELO DE COMBUSTIBLES LIQUIDOS Y LUBRICANTES S.A. 25 Feb., 1970 [25 Feb., 1969], No. 9094/70. Heading C5E. Insulating oils for transformers are made from hydrocarbon oils having viscosities between 1À5 and 6 centistokes at 99‹ C. by catalytic hydrogenation in the presence of hydrogen to modify the chemical structure of the oil and to eliminate O, S or N atoms from the oil, distillation of the hydrogenated oil, dewaxing of the distillation residue by fractional crystallization and treatment of the dewaxed oil with an adsorbent earth. The hydrogenation can be carried out at 300-450‹ C. and 80-350 atmospheres using a catalyst of Ni and W sulphides on alumina or of Ni and Mo sulphides on silica-alumina. A feed oil, e.g. a spindle oil, is hydrogenated at 1, separated under high pressure at 2 to provide recycle hydrogen and then under low pressure at 3, the oil is distilled at 4 to remove gas, gasoline and gas oil fractions and to recover a bottoms oil. The bottoms oil is dewaxed by cooling with a mixture of methyl ethyl ketone and toluene to precipitate wax and then contacted with an adsorbent earth.
