Abstract
1,193,220. Making base oils for lubricants. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 2 Dec., 1968 [4 Dec., 1967], No. 57082/68. Heading C5E. A high-viscosity-index base oil for the production of lubricating oil is made from a paraffin.naphthenic hydrocarbon oil which has a high content of naphthenes with condensed rings and is poor in aromatics, by contacting the oil with H 2 in the presence of a basic catalyst comprising more than 0À5% b.w. Pt on alkali metal- or alkaline earth metal-containing alumina at a partial pressure of H 2 of more than 10 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and a temperature of at least 345‹ C. The preferred pressure range is 50 to 75 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and the temparature 375‹ to 450‹ C., and Na and K are the preferred alkali metals, in amounts not exceeding 4% b.w. of the alumina. The catalyst preferably contains 1% to 5% b.w. Pt. Feedstocks include a waxy distillate boiling above 350‹ C., a catalytically cracked cycle oil having a B.R. of 350‹ to 510‹ C., a deasphalted residual and a vacuum distillate obtained therefrom. The feed typically contains 5 to 50% b.w. paraffins, 10 to 50% b.w. mononaphthenes, and the rest di-, tri- and higher polynaphthenes, and up to 5000 p.p.m. sulphur is tolerable. The content of aromatics in the feed may be reduced by selective extraction or by catalytic hydrogenation, and a desulphurization catalyst may be used. The inventive process may be carried out in a fixed or fluidized catalyst bed, with recycling of the oil and/or H 2 , the required base oil being the product boiling above 350‹ C.
