Abstract

1,253,962. Calcium silicate composition. DUROX BUILDING UNITS Ltd., and R. H. DENNIS. 4 Nov., 1968 [4 Aug., 1967; 2 July, 1968], Nos. 35951/67 and 31584/68. Heading C3N. [Also in Division Cl] A calcium silicate composition comprising at least 0-05%, based on the dry weight of the composition, of asphalt, bitumen and/or coal tar pitch is cured in steam at above 100 p.s.i.g. The composition can be dense, porous and/or lightweight and can be made from Portland cement, sand, hydrated lime, quicklime, flint, aluminium powder, expanded aggregates such as expanded clay, shale, slate, perlite and vermiculite, foamed slag, diatomaceous earth, chalk, sawdust, wood wool, sintered pulverized fuel ash, clinker, breeze, pumice, foam polystyrene, asbestos, glass fibres, metallic fibres and synthetic or natural organic fibres. The calcium silicate composition can be an asbestos product made by water-laying a mixture of Portland cement and chrysotile asbestos, by autoclaving a mixture comprising lime, powdered silica, water and asbestos in the presence of caustic alkali and then moulding and steam curing, or by autoclaving and steam curing a mixture comprising Portland cement, sodium silicate and asbestos fibres. The asphalt, bitumen and/or coal tar pitch can be introduced into the compositions as a fine powder or an emulsior.
