Abstract
A method of manufacturing thermally insulating light moulded articles comprises adding to the matrix, as the pore-forming component, expanded graphite and thereafter processing the mixture to form a thermally insulating light moulded article. Suitable matrix material is a hydraulically bonding material, for example Portland cement, alumina cement, magnesia cement or stabilized burnt dolomite. The matrix may also comprise a non-hydraulically bonding material chosen from fireclay, aluminarich fireclay, corundum, silica and mixtures thereof, in admixture with a bonding agent, for example waterglass, sulphite waste liquor, dextrin and mixtures thereof. A further matrix material comprises a carbonaceous material, for example petroleum coke and a carbonaceous bonding agent, for example tar, bitumen and mixtures thereof. Stabilized burnt dolomite is obtained by burning dolomite to which has been added sufficient silicic acid to convert the calcium oxide content of the dolomite into di- and/or tri-calcium silicate. In examples there are prepared mixtures of (1) stabilized hydraulically bonding burnt dolomite, expanded graphite and water; (2) fireclay, expanded graphite and waterglass solution; (3) ground petroleum coke, expanded graphite and soft pitch. The mixtures are put into moulds and set to form bricks. To increase the hardness the bricks are heated at 1300 DEG to 1450 DEG C. while embedded in carbon powder to prevent oxidation.ALSO:A method of manufacturing thermally insulating light moulded articles comprises adding to the matrix, as the pore forming component, expanded graphite and thereafter processing the mixture to form a thermally insulating light moulded article. Suitable matrix material is a hydraulically bonding material, for example, Portland cement, alumina cement, magnesia cement or stabilized burnt dolomite. The matrix may also comprise a non-hydraulically bonding material chosen from five clay, alumina-rich fire clay, corundum, silica and mixtures thereof, in admixture with a bonding agent, for example waterglass, sulphite waste liquor, dextrin and mixtures thereof, a further matrix material comprises a carbonaceous material, for example, petroleum coke, and a carbonaceous bonding agent, for example, tar, bitumen and mixtures thereof. Stabilized burnt dolomite is obtained by burning dolomite to which has been added sufficient silicic acid to convert the calcium oxide content of the dolomite into di- and/or tricalcium silicate. In examples these are prepared mixtures of (1) stabilized hydraulically bonding burnt dolomite, expanded graphite and water; (2) fire clay, expanded graphite and waterglass solution; (3) ground petroleum coke, expanded graphite and soft pitch. The mixtures are put into moulds and set to form bricks. To increase the hardness the bricks are heated at 1300 DEG to 1450 DEG C. while embedded in carbon powder to prevent oxidation.
