1,253,792. Making steel sheet; working at specified temperatures; improving physical properties. KONINKLIJKE NEDERLANDSCHE HOOGOVENS EN STAALFABRIEKEN N.V. 19 Jan., 1970 [22 Jan., 1969], No. 2526/70. Headings B3A and B3V. [Also in Division C7] A method of making thin steel sheet in strip or plate form comprises hot-rolling a steel slab of low carbon content the last passes being at a temperature of 750‹ to 800‹ C., coiling it at 610‹ to 720‹ C., cold-rolling and then annealing such that at least 80% of the coiled sheet reaches a highest temperature between 580‹ and 650‹ C. The slab is preferably heated initially to a temperature between 1080‹ and 1170‹ C. and more preferably between 1100‹ and 1150‹ C. Preferred ranges for the last hot-rolling passes, coiling and annealing are 760‹ to 790‹ C., 640‹ to 680‹ C. and 590‹ to 610‹ C. respectively. To decrease sensitivity to aging the steel chosen is a rimmed or semi-killed steel of chromium content 0À08 to 0À20% and preferably 0À14%. Instead of, or in combination with, chromium one or more of the metals Al, Zn, Hf, Ti, Be, Nb, V, Ta or B may be included in an amount to give the equivalent nitrogen binding capacity as the chromium in iron below 650‹ C. The R-values (strain ratios) of the steel may be improved by the addition of one or more of the elements Cu, W, Mb, P, Bi, Pb, Sb, Nb, Ti or Se. The carbon content of the steel may be reduced to below 0À06%, and preferably below 0À02%, during annealing.
