Abstract

1,252,674. Anti-skid systems. CAM GEAKS Ltd. 18 Feb., 1969, No. 8699/69. Heading F2F. An anti-skid braking device for fluid pressure vehicle brakes, comprises in combination an inertial mass 7 rotatably mounted on a spindle 5 which is rotated with a vehicle wheel and is given axial movement when there is relative rotation between the mass and the spindle, a braking fluid control valve 11 operated in accordance with such axial movement, a pressure accumulator 15, and fluid connectors all so arranged that operation of the valve caused inertially by predetermined rotational deceleration of the vehicle wheel relieves the fluid pressure applied to the brake servomotor 2 of such wheel by connecting the pressure source and the brake servomotor to the pressure accumulator. As shown, the spindle 5 is driven by a frictionally driven wheel 4 in engagement with the brake disc 1 of a caliper-type brake, the flywheel 7 being screwed on to the spindle and housed in a body 6 including a cylinder 9 for the valve 11 which is urged towards the flywheel by a preset or selected spring 12 adjustable by externally accessible means or shims. When the wheel associated with the wheel 4 stops with rapid deceleration, the flywheel moves to the right as seen in the Figure and a push rod 10 moves the valve so that duct 12A is opened via ducts 9A, 14 and 14A to the accumulator, the pressure in the line 3 being reduced and the wheel, previously skidding, being released; the flywheel screws back along the spindle 5. Upon release of pressure in the line 3 the fluid in the accumulator is discharged via restriction 14E and valve 14D to the line. In a modification, the cylinder 9 is directly ducted to the line 3 and to the master brake cylinder, the valve, upon being shifted to the right, connecting the line 3 to the accumulator. The flywheel may be driven on or from a transmission shaft to respond to locking of a pair of wheels driven through a differential, and the spindle may be driven by a cable.
