Abstract

1,251,988. Ferrites. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 20 Nov., 1968 [21 Nov., 1967], No. 55018/68. Heading H1H. A nickel zinc cobalt ferrite having a cation content equivalent to 72-82 atom per cent Fe, 10-27 atom per cent Ni, 1-13 atom per cent Zn and 0À4-1À2 atom per cent Co is made by (1) mixing metal oxides or compounds which form the oxides on firing, (2) calcining and wet milling the mixture, (3) drying and shaping the resultant material under pressure, (4) firing the pressed material at 1100-1250‹ C., (5) cooling the product to a temperature above the Curie point (475-700‹ C.) either (a) at a rate of 400-2000‹ C. per hour in any atmosphere, or (b) at a rate of 30-400‹ C. per hour in an atmosphere containing 0À7-10% O 2 , and (6) annealing the resulting ferrite by cooling from said temperature above the Curie point at a rate of up to and including 100‹ C. per hour in an atmosphere containing at least 18% O 2 , the remainder of the atmosphere being substantially inert. After step (5), the ferrite may be quenched at a rate of 400-2000‹ C. per hour to below 400‹ C., machined, and then reheated to above the Curie point preparatory to the annealing step (6). Calcining may be carried out at 800-1100‹ C. for 2-16 hours, and the firing may last 3-12 hours. A small amount of CaO, e.g. 0À05-0À15% by wt. may be added to starting materials, which preferably contain not more than 0À04% Si. -
