Abstract

1,251,536. Pulley arrangements; braking. NIHON REGULATOR K.K. 24 Dec., 1968 [28 Dec., 1967], No. 61466/68. Heading B8B. [Also in Division F2] In a rope and pulley system for the free descent of a load from an elevated position, the speed of descent is maintained substantially constant by a unit comprising a gear pump 28, 30 in a closed hydraulic circuit and driven by the rope 32, passing around pulleys 26, and a flow control valve 52 in the circuit for maintaining the flow rate substantially constant irrespective of the torque applied to the gear pump. The fluid pressure on either side of a construction 46 in the fluid circuit between the supply and discharge conduits 40, 42 for the pump is sensed by supplying fluid from each side of the orifice 46 to one end 54, 56 of the spring-centred spool valve 52, and any pressure differential causes the valve 52 to control the fluid flow until the pressures are balanced. A shut-off valve 44 in the closed circuit acts as a brake for the pulley system and may be operated by a load on the rope 32 as it reaches the ground. The rope 32 passes over the two pulleys 26 and over an angled pulley 34 therebetween further rollers, not shown, pressing the rope into engagement with the pulleys 26.
