When the beams lie in a horizontal plane, the generally horizontal rows of apertures should be barrel-shaped and the generally vertical columns pin-cushion shaped, and the specification derives equations for the curves when the screen is spherical and when it is cylindrical. The pitch of the apertures should decrease away from the centre along the horizontal axis and increase along the vertical axis according to parabolic laws, so that the phosphor dots on the screen may form a uniform close-packed hexagonal array. 1,203,421.
